“Our intention is to provoke thought and conversation”

Tō tātau Kāinga, tō tātou hītori

MARTIN AWA CLARKE LANGDON (Ngāti Whawakia, Ngāti Hikairo, Kāi Tahu)

“Tō tātau Kāinga, To tātau Hītori” 2023 Te Rama o Matahuānga was a driving concept for the artist, reflecting on the place of seen and memorialised histories in our constructed landscape. Langdon has created an artwork that draws symbolism from the immediate environment; The Seddon Memorial Light, The Judas Tree and other elements form the basis of visual reflection. The mural incorporating Langdons signature font to provide prompts to various unseen histories, relationships and concepts to consider in our quest to look back with new light to help us and the next generation engage in what defines our history moving forward.

We don't need to tear down these reminders of our colonial past but we do need to start thinking about what is missing, how change has occured and how we might counter balance the experience and meaning of what our home should feel like.

The constructed site was challenging for me but the opportunity to dislodge the perceived entrenched 'history' to be reconsidered as symbolically changed was my only way to respond and start thinking about the ongoing impacts they represent to those key histories that are missing. We can embrace positive change is important as we think about what might counter balance.

I don't don't necessarily believe in tearing down these reminders to our colonial past but instead we need to start thinking about the ongoing impacts to those key communities and histories not represented. We must start thinking about how we strategically counter balance how we want to experience and represent our home if we are to ever reconcile and embrace a new pathways forward in partnership.
